Hi everyone! Welcome to my Gardening blog – one of my exciting new ventures as I begin growing my own fruits, vegetables, and herbs!
I’ll be honest with you – I did not inherit my dad’s green thumb. My dada has been growing our own root vegetables for as long as I can remember and has always made it look, somewhat, effortless. Back in my hometown of Newfoundland, we would load up our quads, head down to the beach and pitchfork kelp and seaweed that had washed up on the shore. We would pack it tight in our carts, haul it up the cliffside to our foundation and lay it across in what we call “drills” – mounds approximately 2ft high and 20ft long. That kelp and seaweed acts as most natural, incredible fertilizer that provide us with the most amazing root vegetables like nothing you can buy in any store.
Watching my dad work that land with such knowledge and confidence always amazed me. My thumb was decidedly more “dark brown” than green – but this year I decided to change that. I have started small with a windowsill of garden herbs, tomatoes, and strawberry seedlings and I have to say, when things actually started to grow I was absolutely thrilled. There is something so deeply satisfying about nurturing a living thing and watching it thrive.
I’ll be sharing my wins, my failures, my tips and everything in between in the comments below. If you’re a gardening guru I would love to hear your advice and tips, failures and successes – and if you’re a fellow beginner, let’s figure this out together! I will also be adding photos and videos along the way so you can see exactly what I’m up to in the garden – from my little windowsill seedlings all the way to hopefully a full outdoor garden of my own one day. Stay tuned and enjoy the journey with me!
